Reforestation in the school of Fiadanana

A living fence around the schoolyard, with plants that provide shade as well as food was intended to demonstrate the concept of reforestation hands on to the students. Right after the school was built parents planted bananas in anticipation of the opening of their school. (Planting fruit trees please click here)

The relentless sun in the dry season makes it challenging to find plants that adapt well to Fiadanana’s climate. Taking a leap of faith and embarking in trail and error to see what takes root and what may not, works best. In October 2007 seeds were given to Zahana from a farmer nearby that grew well for them in the this climate. The result is the living fence you see in the pictures from April 2008.
